BT Engineering Journal BT Engineering Journal

British Telecommunications Engineering Journal

The successor to the Post Office Engineering Journal, the BTEJ ran from April 1982 until 1999 when it was replaced in January 2000 by 'The Journal' also published by the Institution of British Telecommunications Engineers.

I have been given a set of later edition BTEJs which have been scanned and saved. The full set has been available on Archive.org for some time, but the files are unduly large and take a long time to download.

Archive.org index of BTEJ

I have optimised the files, perfomed OCR on the text and added bookmarks and page numbers to the files.
The complete run of BTEJ is available as shown in this directory:

British Telecom Journal

British Telecom Journal

A magazine appealing to a more general readership than the learned engineering journals. Started by British Telecom with Volume 1 in Spring 1980 and published quarterly until Vol 9 in June 1988 when it was replaced by British Telecom world

Most of the issues are available and are shown in this directory:

British Telecom journal

National Telephone Journal

National Telephone Journal

Published monthly by the National Telephone Company from April 1906 until it was absorbed into the Post Office in 1912.

The issues are archive scans from bound copoies of the Journal. Volumes 1 to 4 are still contained into one file covering the 12 isues from April to March the following year. Volumes 5 and 6 have been split into individual issues in subfolders. When time permits the early volumes will also be split.

The NTJ has been scanned in 2-colour mode so photographs are poorly reproduced.

Post Office Electrical Engineers' Journal Post Office Electrical Engineers' Journal

Post Office Electrical Engineers' Journal

This is the grand-daddy of them all. Published by the Institution of Post Office Electrical Engineers quarterly from April 1907.

The earliest we've been able to scan is Volume 4 Part 4 from 1912. There are a few available in the 19-teens, but beyond 1920 virtually all issues are available up to the last one in January 1982. It was succeeded by the British Telecom Engineering journal.

Most are scanned from full copies which includes the advertising pages, front and back. Others had to be scanned from bound copies, which did not include the adverts, nor the front cover. These are marked 'NO COVER' in the file name.

Post Office Telecommunications Journal Post Office Telecommunications Journal

Post Office Telecommunications Journal

Like the British Telecom Journal above this was aimed at a more general readership including PO staff themselves. It was published quarterly and started in November 1948. It ran until winter 1979 when it was succeded by the BT Journal.

The early editions are archive copies scanned from bound editions and so do not include the cover or advertisements and photographs are poor. From Volume 8 Autumn 1955 there is an almost complete run of full editions scanned from paper copies.

Most of the issues are available and are shown in this directory:

National Telephone Journal

Telegraph and Telephone Journal

The introduction by the Postmaster General says that it will "form a much-wanted link between the Telegraph and Telephone Services. The two Services have so much in common, both from the technical and commercial point of view, that it is essential there should be sources of information and means of communication and comparison open to the Staff of both Departments.

Started in October 1914 it was published monthly until September 1926. The issues are archive scans from bound copies of the Journal. Most volumes are in a file containing all twelve issues. Volumes 7 and 12 have been separated into individual files.

The T&T Journal has been scanned in 2-colour mode so photographs are poorly reproduced.
